What is Allah Gave Me a Tongue to Taste about?
Allah Gave Me a Tongue to Taste is an Islamic audiobook for children aged 4 to 9, in rhyme, about the sense of taste, the many foods Allah has given us, and thanking Him for them.
A child explains how the tiny taste buds on their tongue tell them whether food is nasty or a tasty treat, and with their eyes closed they try to guess what they are eating. Lemons are bitter and sugar is sweet; yoghurt is sour, unless there is fruit in it; chicken and cheese on toast are savoury; ice cream is cold and chillies are hot. Cream is smooth, biscuits are crunchy, and fizzy drinks make their taste buds tickle.
The book reminds children that food helps us grow and stay healthy, and that some foods are better for us than others. It celebrates friends from different lands who eat with chopsticks, with their hands, or with knives and forks, and it asks everyone to eat up every crumb and leave nothing on the plate. It names halal foods found in Allah's book, such as milk, honey, olives, figs, dates, ginger and grapes, and ends with the best drink of all, Zamzam water, and dates from the desert.
Finally, the child raises their hands to thank Allah for so much food and so many tastes, and says Alhamdulillah. The book is written by Ayesha Jones. It takes about three minutes, is music-free, and is also one of the five books in the Allah Gave Me... Audio Collection.
