What is A Sense of Gratitude: Exploring the Five Senses about?
A Sense of Gratitude: Exploring the Five Senses is an Islamic audiobook for children aged 4 to 9 that goes through each of the five senses in turn and thanks Allah for making us in such a special way.
A child tells us about the senses they use every day. Their eyes see the beauty of Allah's creation: mountains, trees, butterflies, birds high in the sky, ants marching in a line, and colours from purple and blue to ruby and gold. Their nose smells Teta's baked cookies and the fresh mint in the garden, and their science teacher shows them how to waft a smell towards their face to stay safe. Their tongue enjoys cake and apple pie, but they secretly love fruit and vegetables too: the simple things Allah created, like apples, cucumbers, carrots and honey.
Their hands feel a cosy blanket and a loved one's touch when they are ill, and they hold slimy frogs and hairy dogs. They raise their hands to make dua, because Allah tells us to call on Him when we are sad. Their ears hear the adhan calling them to pray, a fire engine rushing to help, and a baby brother crying.
A repeated rhyme, "two eyes to see, a nose to smell, a tongue so I can taste", ties the book together, and children soon say it along. It helps children notice their senses and turn that noticing into thanks. It takes about four minutes and is music-free.
