What is the Islamic new year?
The Islamic new year begins on the first day of Muharram, the first month of the Hijri calendar. The years are counted from the Hijrah, when the Prophet ﷺ left Makkah and made his home in Madinah. The calendar follows the moon: each of its twelve months begins with a new moon, so the year is shorter than the solar one, and the new year comes about eleven days earlier each time.
Al Qaswa, the Special Camel tells of the Prophet's ﷺ favourite camel, who carried him to Madinah and knelt at the place where his mosque was built. Tala Al Badru Alaina is an animated nasheed of the song Madinah is said to have sung to welcome him. Months in Islam is a short sing-along of the twelve months in order, from Muharram to Dhul-Hijjah. All three are free of music.
